Programme Structure

The Masters of Business Administration(Operations Management) course at SIOM aims to equip each engineer with vital skills and knowledge necessary to design, manage, analyze and improve the operations in an enterprise. Hence the objective is to develop a crystal clear, strategic understanding of operations systems, their vital components, contributions, interactions with other functional areas and the analytical tools necessary to address practical and strategic issues in operations management, amongst the students.

Semester System

The two year residential MBA (Operations Management) programme is divided into four semesters, each of duration of approximately 4 months.

During Semester – I, the students will study the basic courses in management studies and Operations Management in particular. The emphasis will be on strengthening conceptual and fundamental knowledge of basic areas through the theoretical sessions, case studies, and guest sessions to facilitate development of thinking abilities in students. They will also undergo self-development workshops, plant visits and outward bound learning programmes. All the courses of this semester are core i.e. compulsory for all students.

Value Added Courses

Following value added courses are introduced in this semester to ensure a strong foundation to take up Semester I.

  1. Known & Unknown of Contemporary Business Management
  2. Research for Business Decision

In Semester - II, the focus will be on core Operations and functional subjects. Emphasis will be on assignments, field projects and experts sessions aimed at developing the required managerial competencies. This will be in addition to the ongoing regular sessions, guest sessions, seminars etc. Students will also undergo the classroom training on Six Sigma methodology. Students have the option to choose elective courses which would be influenced by the choice of their future career or interest in a particular course.

This semester has few elective courses. It has project based learning (PBL) in lieu of electives, selected students will conduct live industry projects mentored by SIOM faculty and company guide. This semester covers a few flexi courses which are most contemporary courses introduced just before the start of the semester, which helps in keeping the most relevant industry acclaimed curriculum. This semester will be also well supported by experiential learning, simulation etc.

Summer Internship Programme (SIP)

At the end of the first year, students will have to undertake Summer Internships in various companies across sectors for 8 to 10 weeks. The objective is to understand and appreciate the realities in the business operations. Students will have the opportunity to apply their classroom learning and research skills at the workplace. It is also aimed at developing the required competencies to prepare them to take on the responsibilities at the workplace with the power of knowledge and the confidence that comes from learning and sharing. This corporate interface also helps them to understand expectations that companies have from students. Company observations regarding students behavior and performance during internship is a deciding factor for Pre-placement offers (PPO’s).

Semester – III focuses more on specialized areas of Operations Management as well as on preparing students for placements with the corporates by delivering the right knowledge, skills and aptitude. Students have the option to choose elective courses which would be influenced by the choice of their future career or interest in a particular course. Through this, the students have the opportunity to study additional subjects in other specialization areas such as Marketing, HR, Finance, IT, Project Management, SCM, SAP-ERP. & other contemporary discipline with respect to its linkage to operations.

Semester - IV comprises Core & Electives courses and a final project based on Six Sigma for a duration of 6 to 8 weeks. The students would spend time with the industry and apply the learning and help the industry to complete a project of value to the company. Learning will not be restricted to only the classroom teaching but will also involve in house projects, research, social projects, field assignments, and outward bound learning which will link them to the real world.
