The 6th Convocation of Symbiosis International University was held on 6 December 2009 amongst the sylvan surroundings of the university’s Lavale Campus which was all decked up for the momentous occasion. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was the dynamic personality, Dr Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs.
As convocations go it was a somber yet joyous occasion for all those students who had successfully passed out of the hallowed portals of the various constituent institutes of SIU. It was heartening to see thousands of cheerful students thronging the Lavale Campus and greeting their fellow classmates with squeals of delight on seeing one another after a long gap of eight months.
The ex students of SIOM evinced keen desire to attend the 6th Convocation and all students registered for the same. We were indeed happy that 52 students could finally manage to take time off from their companies and attend the ceremony.
The ceremony commenced with the traditional procession of the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Members of the Planning Board, Deans of various faculties and Members of the Academic Council. All students, looking scholarly in their convocation gowns, were seated as per their streams. The ex students of SIOM looked very dashing and debonair in their blue collared black convocation gowns as they took their place amongst the other Management students.
The ceremony included felicitation of the chief guest by the Chancellor and Founder Director of SIU, Dr SS Mujumdar, presenting of the Annual Report of the University by the Vice Chancellor, Dr M S Raste and felicitations to the award winners. The winner of the gold medal from SIOM, for standing first in the MBA Batch of 2007-09, went to Ms Meghna Rath. It was indeed a proud moment for her, the Institute and her parents when she received the gold medal at the hands of Dr Shashi Tharoor. The highlight of the ceremony was the address to the students by the chief guest, Dr Shashi Tharoor. He spoke extensively on matters concerning foreign policy and how each one of us would soon be affected by it. He particularly exhorted the student community to take an active interest in the foreign policy of the country and was hopeful that some of them would aspire to join the IFS.
The latter half of the ceremony was devoted to presenting of certificates to the successful students at the hands of their respective directors and faculties. The director, Dr Vandana Sonwaney, and the faculties handed over certificates to the students of SIOM. As a token of affection and remembrance of their association with SIOM, the Director presented each alumnus with a memento in the form of a crystal diamond along with a best wishes card. The photo session that followed was a veritable riot with everyone vying for a photo with the director and faculty members. It was indeed great fun to see the ex students flinging their caps during the photo session which has now become so symbolic of all convocations.
All in all it was a wonderful Convocation with lots of old memories being exchanged between faculties, staff and students. Meeting up with alumni is always a great occasion and leaves nostalgic memories to cherish for ever.
Last but not the least, the highlight of the day was when we heard the exciting announcement of two of our ex students, Nidhi Ashani and Anand Sodha, deciding to tie the nuptial knot. We hope others will soon follow suit!!!
Heartiest congratulations to all the successful students of MBA Batch 2007-09!
